Archives
View the catalog of the American Surgical Association’s physical archives at the National Library of Medicine’s History of Medicine Division in Bethesda, Maryland, via the ASA Finding Aid. Correspondence, minutes, speeches, audio recordings, photographs, artifacts, and bound volumes document the organizational activities of the American Surgical Association. The archives of the Association consist mostly of records of the preparation for, and the proceedings of, the Association's annual meetings, including presentation of scholarly papers and presidential addresses. Since the Association's inception in 1880, there has been a keen awareness of its history. This awareness is evident in the ASA's careful record keeping and its preservation of tradition. A key component of the collection is the sheer intellectual output by its members; this includes the scholarly research included in the Minutes throughout ASA's history, as well as research papers and journal articles by members. On several separate occasions, the Association saw fit to create collections of its official papers in bound volumes. These include the yearly meeting minutes (found within the Meetings series), along with Transactions of the American Surgical Association and the Registration Books (found within the Meetings series).
Digitized Transactions
Back volumes of the Transactions, approximately the first 40 years’ worth, appear on the Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form, providing free access to researchers, historians, scholars, the print disabled, and the general public.
Since the Internet Archive is being continually updated, you may search for additional ASA materials here.
