Recent ASA Council Actions

Recent ASA Council Actions
The Council of the Association met via conference call on July 29, 2019, in person on Saturday, January 18, 2020, in Toronto, Ontario, via conference call on March 12, 2020, and via video conference on Wednesday, April 15, 2020. The following are action and informational items from these meetings:

  • Voted to induct four new Honorary Fellows into the Association, whose profiles appear earlier in this report.

  • Selected two recipients, one each from the Association of Women Surgeons and the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons, for the ASA’s new Surgical Leaders Fellowship.

  • Signed a renewal agreement between the ASA and the Publisher of the Annals of Surgery, after an extended period of negotiations.

  • Voted unanimously to cancel the 140th Annual Meeting, with Council members remaining in their current positions through the 2021 Annual Meeting. Further, voted to negotiate and re-contract with the Grand Hyatt Washington—the venue for the canceled 2020 meeting—for the 2024 Annual Meeting.

  • Approved the creation of an ad hoc committee to review the draft of Perspectives on Ethical Leadership in Academic Surgery, before this compendium of surgical leaders’ viewpoints on ethics in management and decision-making is disseminated.

  • Having selected two ASA Fellows to attend the now cancelled ESA 2020 meeting as part of the new ASA/ESA Exchange Program, agreed to let these same two Fellows attend the ESA’s 2021 meeting and further to select a third participant just for the 2021 program.

  • Having cancelled the ASA 2020 meeting, agreed to extend a one-year extension to all Fellows facing their final year of having to meet the Association’s meeting attendance requirement.

  • Voted to add demographic questions to the profile page of the ASA website’s Members Only Area, so that the Association can define its diversity baseline then chart how it improves each year.
