Lawrence Garth Hampson, M.D., FRCSC, FACS, 1923 - 2019

Lawrence Garth Hampson died May 17, 2019 in Westmount, Quebec at age 95. Dr. Hampson was a graduate of McGill medical school and trained in general surgery at the Montreal General Hospital, followed by a fellowship at the Lahey Clinic. After service in Royal Canadian Navy during World War II, Dr. Hampson returned home to Montreal and practiced general surgery for more than 40 years at the Montreal General Hospital.

Dr. Hampson embraced academic surgery. He established a basic science lab studying organ dysfunction after resuscitation from shock and was a strong believer that clinical practice should be informed by knowing clinical outcomes. He was an excellent teacher and took great pride in mentoring young surgeons. Dr. Hampson was also a great advocate for the importance of participating actively in specialty societies to maintain knowledge and skills up to date.

A great believer in work-life integration, Dr. Hampson was an avid golfer, skier and tennis player. He truly loved life. He was married to Marjorie Byatt for more than 50 years and will be missed by his three daughters Wendy Lowe, Jane McMurrich, and Susan David, as well as his nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
